Beware Diabetes In Children

Diabetes is usually synonymous with the disease in adults aged 40 years and over. But not many parents who menggetahui that children can suffer from diabetes. Even the number of young diabetics in Indonesia in 2 years have increased by 500%.

Even data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that 366 million people worldwide have diabetes in 2011. Of these, 78,000 children have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Child diabetes expert from Faculty of medicine / RSCM, Dr. Safe Pulungan, Sp.A (K) said that people with diabetes in children has increased, this could be seen in 2009, children who suffer from diabetes are up to 150 children. However, recent data in 2012 was nearly 800 children with diabetes. In the midst of these conditions, attention to diabetes in children is less preferred than adult diabetics. In fact, diabetes in children requires attention and assistance.

As for parents who have children diagnosed with diabetes, it is not easy to accept the reality. But this is a challenge for families to be able to adjust the activity patterns of the child, such as school, learning, playing, eating and exercise habits. Another thing that must be received by children with diabetes and their families is that they have this condition is to inform people about the home environment.

Diabetes in children, otherwise known as type 1 diabetes, is a condition when the pancreas organ children no longer produce insulin, something that is very needed by the body for growth and development of cells. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) in the blood is not able to be used by the fuel cell as energy generation.

Several possible risk factors of diabetes in children include:

1. Family history and genetics. One of the parents who have type 1 diabetes, are most likely to lower the child's condition.


2. There are some viruses virus attacks trigger mechanism is an autoimmune destruction of beta cells. As epstein-Barr virus, coxsackievirus, and cytomegalovirus.

He said to watch out for people with type 1 diabetes must maintain tinggkat blood sugar within normal limits, by adjusting the diet, exercise, and intensive insulin therapy. Monitor their blood sugar levels regularly.

The increasing cases of diabetes in children requires the attention of all parties, particularly access to health care for patients to avoid complications. Expanding access to information about the child's diabetes management not only to parents and families, but also the environment in which the patient attended.
